I remember a few things I did that I allowed my friends to see- one was a short story I wrote at 13 that included a "sex scene" (the couple were seen to retire to the bedroom together.. that was it) and somehow one of my teachers was made aware, so embarrassing! Maybe that scarred me lol!

Instead of using the term "artist"- what about people who describe themselves as a painter, a composer, in my case, a photographer? Those terms describe a specific activity but by using them you can be perceived as having some kind of skill/ability beyond the average.

The question, for me, comes down to this- how do I accurately describe what I do, without either sounding like a dilettante or cheating myself? I've created something or other all my life, I work as a web designer, but it's only since I've decided to really learn photography that I've wondered about whether I can claim "artist."

When I was a teenager, I also used to stay up 'til the wee hours making elaborate notes,
complete with illustrations, which I would pass to my friends the next day between classes. Other kids often grabbed them from my friends & they got passed around the whole class. One particular series of notes titled "Us 10 Years from Now" nearly started a melee.
Thank goodness blogging lets me continue passing notes to my friends all these years later.

In my experience only dilettantes refer to themselves as artists.

The fact that you don't claim the term is one measure of your talent - that and your actual output - this blog, for example. I say that knowing only this post - though I follow you on Twitter. My experience, for what it's worth - I'm a 51-year-old degreed (BFA) independent creative director. The good news: In my miles around the track, I've met more real talents than dilettantes - but, boy, do the latter make life miserable!
